Cahora Bassa Dam
Covers the district of Cahora Bassa, Mague, Maravia, and part of Zumbo. It`s the second largest dam in Africa and the fifth largest in the world. The reservoir has a surface of 2000 km 2 , 270 km long and at its widest point reaches over 30 km. Apart from the great variety of fishes that attracts tourists, this area also includes Islands with beautiful views. In the margins of the reservoir various wildlife species may be observed, such as elephants, kudos, impalas, lions, buffalos, monkeys, hippopotamus, and crocodiles, amongst others. Large quantities of birds may also be seen.
You can also find fantastic accommodation along the edges of this beautiful dam with plenty of activities to enjoy, such as, kayaking, exploring the dam by boat, fly-fishing (haven for catching Tiger Fish).
It is approximately 125 km South East of Tete.
The Village of Songo is the headquarters of Cahora Bassa district, located on the province of Tete. Here is where the headquarters of the Hydroelectric of Cahora Bassa is located, since the dam is located at a distance of nearly 10 kilometers from the village, and on its womb, the central with its five powerful generators. It is a village that is in its whole mistaken with the story of the gigantic enterprise. The Cahora Bassa district has as limits, the district of Maravia on North, the district of Magoé on West, Zimbabwe on South, the district of Changara on East and the district of Chiuta on the Northeast. According to the 1997 Census, the district has got 57 675 inhabitants and an area of 10 598 km², resulting in a population density of 5,4 h/km².
