Quirimbas National Park

The Quirimbas National Park was created by Decree nº. 14/2002 of 6th of June, is the first public area established by the initiative of a provincial authority under the auspices of the WWF in Maputo. It is situated in the Quirimbas archipelago in the province of Cabo Delgado and occupies an area of 7500 km2of marine and terrestrial ecosystems.

 

Location:  The Quirimbas National Park (QNP) is situated in Cabo Delgado Province, covers a large area of the mainland in addition to 11 islands in the Quirimbas Archipelago.

Area:  7,500 km2

Access:  The QNP can be accessed by air travel, from all provincial capital cities and regional flights from the RSA, Tanzania, Kenya to Pemba and later on by road leading to the inner park or by small aircrafts available at Pemba airport or through local tourist agents or by sea to the park islands.

Best viewing season:   In the weak months, between April and October.

Accommodation:  Quilalea Island Resort, Matemo Island Resort, Medjumbe Island Resort, Guludo Lodge, Ibo Island Safaris, Vamizi Island Lodge, Quirimba Island Resort, Cinco Pontas.

Attractions:  Islands, sea environment with coral-reefs and more than 375 fish species, Wild Life (great mammals, birds, and other species), Culture (Ibo Island), Banco de São Lázaro with unique features. Mangroves, mountains, miombo and savannah forests.

Fauna:  Marine species include whales, dolphins, turtles, sharks, a wide range of exotic fish species, the rare and endangered dugong and 375 species of fish while the bird life is amazing. On land, elephants, bufalloes, black sables, elands, sable, wild dogs(dog hunters), lions, leopards, spotted hyenas, jackals and crocodiles may be seen.

Viewing Hours:  The QNP can be visited daily from 7h30 to 16h30.

Particularities:  This Park has a great potential for performance of various ecotourism activities apart from having the particularity of combining within its limits different tourist attraction, such as the sun and sea, wild and cultural life. Its coral-reefs are ideal for diving and snorkelling.
